Problems

  • Manila's man-made problems are

    • acute housing shortage

    • congestion

    • overworked waste and water systems

    • air pollution.

  • The main causes for pollution are the exhaust from motor vehicles and factories.

  • Waste management problems are due to the poor disposal of waste products.

  • Thousands of families make the city cemetery their home with rising population and housing shortages.

  • Immigrants in the capital have been forced to set up home in disaster prone areas.

Solutions

  • Various measures would need to be taken to reduce air pollution. For example:

    • phasing out leaded fuel and use un-leaded fuel instead

    • the use of wind and solar power in factories

    • affordable and efficient public transport system to get cars of the road.

  • Suitable waste disposal improvements are required to lower the impact on public health, environmental and social efforts caused by dumping practices.

  • Solutions for Manila's housing shortages are developments such as:

    • Skyscrapers

    • underground housing

    • more people living in each house or apartment and community centres.

  • The community centres would offer simple funding and care.
